The connoisseurs are the experts to distinguish and identify the jewelry. The old methods can not satisfy the increasing demand of the jewelry. For example, more and more people like to collect the gemstone, but the development of the new technology brings many artificial products which flows into the market. It is hard for the common people to judge which one is true. So the request of the superior connoisseurs becomes important.

After a long research and practice, people gradually formed a habit to discuss the problem in a certain place, where they could learn and communicate with each other easily. They set up a laboratory later on to do more professional practices. This indeed improved the quality of the research and identification. In the last two decades there has been a number of reputable laboratories which graded and provided reports on gemstone.

Each laboratory has its own methodology to evaluate gemstones. Therefore, a stone can be called "pink" by one laboratory while another laboratory calls it "light rosy". One lab can consider a stone as an untreated stone, while another lab concludes that it is heat treated. If so, the order will be destroyed and no prestige.

To reduce those differences, the most respected labs gathered together and established the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee, which aims at the standard of words on reports and certain analytical methods and interpretation of results. Country of origin has sometimes been difficult to find agreement on due to the constant discovery of new locations. Moreover determining a "country of origin" is much more difficult than determining other aspects of a gemstone.

The gem dealers are afraid of the differences between different laboratories, so they try their best to get and make use of those best certification. As the superior country of origin has high reputation than other country of origin. For example, a sapphire from Kashmir or India, which is famous for its cornflower blue color, charges four times the price of the same stone from other countries. The same stone from different place has such big different price, the essential reason is due to the grading of different country of origin.
