Sex Discrimination at Work

Sex discrimination refers to the act of treating the female unfairly, or, the unfavorable attitude towards women.

In our daily life, it is common to see this phenomenon. Though we have for many years been advocating the idea of eliminating sex discrimination completely, it is still commonly found. Females do face the problems when they are in the job-hunting campaign
.

According to some scholars women mainly come across the following problems in the fierce job-hunting campaign. First, in terms of job-hunting process. In the job-hunting campaign, employees tend to choose a male instead of a female, provided they have the equal ability. or they set higher standards for females. Sometimes they would make a sign which said that MEN ONLY. Second, in terms of the quality of the job. Men' jobs are more decent than women's, such as in the fields of government officials, doctors, professors, and managers, etc. In these positions, women are less seen than men. Women's jobs usually require less technology and less culture and education. Third, in terms of working process. They have to face lower salary, worse welfare, earlier retire age, and less opportunity to get promoted. Another problem is that women have to be under more pressure than men do. They have to spend more time and more money in finding a job.

As for women, they face these problems because of the following reasons. Firstly, traditionally, Chinese think that women's domain is at home while men's is at work. Gradually the whole society is inclined to doubt the females' ability. Secondly, employing females worsens the employees' financial burden. Employees have to pay more to women when women are absent due to pregnancy. And they have to take care of the children, which may lead to their less devotion to their job. The third reason is that most of the employees underestimate women's labor capacity.

In order to be more clear, we have done some investigation as follows:

Q: Have you ever experienced sex discrimination at work yourself? Or have you ever heard form your friends or colleagues about their experiences of sexual discrimination?

A: There was one case which impressed me a lot. At the first company I worked, there was a Section Manager who was a young woman. After she had worked in the company for one more year, she became pregnant. When the news spread out, the company forced her to move to another department with a lower rank and salary. I think this is really not fair!

Sex discrimination has been a problem for women over the centuries. Although the situation is getting better gradually, many serious problems still remain. But we believe that they will be solved one day, although it will take a really long time. People should update their concept of women. In the modern world today, women have played a significant part in the society, and their importance is increasingly steadily.
