What ability for Monk Tang actually have to restrict Monkey King? He is just a monko without any special ability but reading hoop malediction, once he begins to read it, Monkey King would suffer greatly, which will prevent him from doing something bad. This is much like conscience in real life, it can restrict and charge inner evil of people. people are afraid to lose trust to others which will make them have no friends and partners if they break their conscience. Therefore, so long as there still exists conscience, it will restrict Monkey King's behavior.
Monk Tang as the represent of conscience, his feature is that he can control Monkey King, then if he is really good enough, why does still need to pilgrimage to the west? That is because the conscience even has its weakness. No doubt that everyone has his or her conscience, but it also influence by two big factors: one is from outside, once the evil comes, we can not do anything to just like Monk Tang on his journey to the west, he always can't protect himself, taken by the evil who wants to eat his meat. Our conscience are often facing the pressure from outside, people are always out of control to their life but to make a concession, it is the same phenomenon as the chinese old saying "since you live on the earth, you can not do anything at your will."
The conscience of people are not just threatened by the outer world, but also has the risk from the inner, that is people's lust. All of human being are having their various desires, so it comes from the saying that self-preservation is the first law of nature. A famous man in ancient times named Wang Yangming ever said that "it is easy to cut the risk off from outside, but the real difficult is to clear out the inner ones". Conscience is as weak as water before the selfish.
Our conscience is seriously hurt under the evil from both outer and inner. We have too much desires, the saying of less desire comes stoutness is just an ideal situation. People are always trying to find all kinds of reasons and excuses to satisfy their selfish desires. Therefore, even though we all have a Monk Tang in our inner heart, it is still necessary for us to pligrimage.
Then what kind of inner evil it would be to effect our conscience? Or what outer evil it is to cause people doing something bad.
